Extraction is fun all the way through, but hardly ever scary. In an on-rails game you’d think you could scare people even easier – the developer decides what you look at, how you move, and where you can go – but in the end the distance that the auto-move puts between the player and the situation is just too much. In fact, I only jumped once during my first playthrough, and it happened to be in a glowstick area (where you need to shake the Wii Remote to keep your personal lamp lit) where an enemy spawn happened right as I brought the light back up. Dead Space puts a lot of effort into the story, but you won’t find many scares along the way. With that being said, it isn’t all perfect. Telekinesis also plays an integral part of the game, giving you the ability to point and press A to grab items and supply boxes. Stasis is not only included, but it’s totally necessary, using an auto-refill system to keep players armed, allowing them to fire at enemies and freeze them in time for 10 second spurts.

Weapons are a blast, including secondary fire for each that diversifies the nine core guns and default pistol (essentially making 20 weapons in all), the upgrade system is more basic than traditional Dead Space, but it works given the game’s design, and while it’s a totally different type of game, it’s still 100% pure Dead Space in feel and execution. Extraction is a rail-shooter utilizing the Wii Remote, PlayStation Move controllerĪnd when it comes to action, Extraction delivers from nearly every angle. It’s as fun to watch unfold as it is to blast through. The script may not always be serious, but chances are it’s entertaining, and stacking Extraction up against any other light gun game out there will put EA’s effort at (or near) the top. After going the distance in the game’s 10 chapter, eight hour story mode I’m right there with the EA developers in wanting a “Man up, Sweetheart” t-shirt. The game has its quirky lines and cliché moments, but for every eye-rolling “ho hum” line there’s more than a few awesome ones. METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCEįirst off, the storytelling: Mixing the same elements as the original Dead Space – video logs, audio logs, text logs, and direct narrative – Extraction pushes a pretty strong cast of characters in a… mostly… interesting script. You’re never safe in Extraction, and that keeps you on edge. Anyone can die at any time, and that includes the person you’re currently playing as. In fact, the team fully embraces the design, including narrative jumps from playable character to playable character. What you don’t know, however, is how it’ll happen, where, and when.

Lexine Murdoch, Nathan McNeill, Gabe Weller and Warren EckhardtĮven though there’s plenty of content out there describing the Dead Space beginnings (anime, comics, and even motion comics, the latter of which is included in full on the game disc of Extraction) Wii’s Dead Space game is a must-play for any fan of the original Dead Space, as it truly envelops you in the grim beginnings of the series, and actually uses the pending doom as a gateway to some great story and gameplay. As anyone familiar with even the smallest snippets of Dead Space promo art would know, things don’t look good for the Ishimura, and within a matter of hours the ship is dead, and the original Dead Space game begins with a salvage crew discovering the massacre. The game kicks off with the colony of Aegis VII uncovering a mysterious marker, and after the planet goes to hell a small team works to find sanctuary in the USG Ishimura, a “planet cracker” ship responsible for the excavation of the marker. Extraction is an origins tale, and as such it takes on some awesome creative liberties within its limited timeline and range. For all those interested in an action shooter with one of the largest narrative efforts on the system, however, Extraction is a must-play. If that isn’t your cup of tea, Extraction won’t be able to convince you to love it.
